Still Lives

Showing photographs, drawings and paintings from the still lives I have done.

The setup of the still life, the view finder I used and my sketchbook. We just used simple lines to draw the outlines of the shapes.

The setup of the still life.

Next I started making still lives using colour. I experimented using ink and stick, pen, paint, oil pastels and felt tip pens. I made four differant experiments. All of the drawing are drawn using continous line, not looking at the paper, holding the paint brush or pen at the end, drawing with the wrong hand or a combination of them all.

On this image I first used red ink and pen to draw the still life, once that had mostly dried I painted the negative using a light blue paint, I then went over all of this using masking tape the take out areas that were too strong and that i felt needed toning down. Then I drew over the top in black pen, black oil pastel and more ink. I quite like this image. I dont like the red but I like the purple ink and the blue paint together. I love all the thin back lines ontop of the bold colours and I love the dripping paint! I managed to creat this effect by spraying water onto my drawing before and after I put the ink on and by using alot of ink. Overall I like some of the lines created although parts are too cluttered and Im not too keen on the colour scheme.

On this image i firstly drew the negative space of the still life in red ink this created a nice colourful bold ground. Once that had dried I drew the still life in blue paint using continuose line drawing I really like the dripping effect of the paint, I created this by putting the paint on thickly. I then drew over the paint and ink in pen. I really like the effect on the pen as it is very thin black lines that are very sketchy but looked quite detailed as they are repeated so much. I dont like the colours of this though, becuase the warm red and cool blue clash too much.

I really hate this image. I really dont like the bright orange and the dark green together as they totally conflict each other. I started this drawing by making a bright orange ground using the negative space, the only thing I like about this is that I left a small line inbetween the two areas and it breaks the bright orange up and makes it slightly nore attractive to look at. I think drew the still life using red ink, and black felt tip pen, using a water spray to make the colours and lines bleed slightly. I think tried to darken the bright orange I hated so much using a green ink, I made it look as much worse though, but I do like the lines it created the colour just was too horrible against the orange.
This is definately my favourite image. I started off by drawing the still life in pen and coloured felt tip pens. I then used a water spray and drew the negative space in red ink. Becuase I used the water spray it meant that the ink and pen bled and I loved this mottles effect. I also laid of masking tape to create another type of thicker lines that arent over powering.

This is all on my drawings together.

I then made a view finder using a piece of a4 paper. I placed the view finder on and interesting section on my favourite still life. I tried to use and area that had quite alot of white on so that it could become a nice ground that wouldnt be too overpowering.

Here I tried to recreate the section of my still life using blue red and black inks and a black felt tip pen.

I then chose another section to recreate. I liked this one because of the masking taped area and the bled ink.

I really like the mottled effect of the red ink. I created this using water that had bleach in, the bleach dissolved some of the colour.

I then chose a second area to recreate.

I love this bleached effect and i really like it over the newspaper.

I love this bled effect and how the colours merge together.

I then chose the two I liked the least and worked into them more.

I used this prop to add more detail to my still lives.

Here I drew the man and the horse in yellow oil pastel.

Here I used a roller to add a darker colour as it was too white. I love the effect of the roller because it creates an uneven textured colour rather than a flat bold colour. I also used brown so that it wasnt too bright as there is already pink, blue and yellow.

I then drew around the horse again in green ink using my finger.

I ripped paper in the shape of the man and horse.

I then put the stencil on my drawing.

I painted over the stencil, painting roughly so there were plenty of gaps to see the image beneath. I used a light colour to lighten the browny red i had put on previously.

Then I used the negative space from the ripped image and painted over in the redy brown.

I was very happy with my two finished pieces.
